James Naismith, in devising the game of basketball in the winter of 1891-92, came up with a set of 13 rules. These rules, some of which have endured and some of which have faded away, form the backbone of the guidelines shaping basketball today. The 13 Rules of Basketball: 1. The Rules. Basketball is a team sport. Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular floor called the court, and there is a hoop at each end. The court is divided into two main sections by the mid-court line.
Violations in basketball include travelling (taking more than one step without bouncing the ball), double dribble (picking the ball up dribbling, stopping then dribbling again with two hands), goaltending (a defensive player interferes with the ball travelling downwards towards the basket) and back court violation (once the ball passes the half way line the offensive team cannot take the ball back over the half way line).
Basketball positions with the numbers as they are known: 1–Point guard. 2–Shooting guard. 3– Small forward. 4–Power forward. 5–Center. Basketball is a sport generally played by five players per team. Historically, these players have been assigned to positions defined by the role they play on the court, from a strategic point of view.

The most recent international rules of basketball were approved 2 February 2014 by FIBA and became effective 1 October of that year.  There are eight rules encompassing 50 articles, covering equipment and facilities, regulations regarding teams, players, captains and coaches, playing regulations, violations, fouls and their penalties, special situations, and the officials and table officials.
